3D Prototyping FAQs
Everything you need to know before sending us your project.
How much does a prototype cost?
The cost depends on the process used, the size of the part, and how much material is required. Unfortunately we can't give pricing over the phone — not even rough pricing — without a CAD file to assess. The final cost is based on machine time plus material used. We're not trying to be difficult; so many factors go into a quote (size, material, complexity) that it's imperative we see the file before quoting.
How much does it cost to scan something?
It depends on the size and complexity of the part, and whether you need an STL file from the scan or want us to reverse-engineer the scan data into a new CAD file such as STEP, IGES or X_T. To quote, please send a series of photos of the part, its approximate sizes, and whether you need an STL or a STEP / IGES / X_T file.
I'm not sure what process my prototype should be made in?
Don't worry — once we receive your files, our highly experienced team of engineers will determine the best and most cost-effective process for your parts. With experienced staff on hand, we'll guide you to the right technology for your needs.
I have a great idea, but it's in my head — I can't get it onto paper, let alone into a CAD file!
Don't worry — speak to our team. Helping you develop your design is something we do regularly. Contact the design team for a quote to bring your concept to life.
Is my idea safe with 3D Prototyping?
100%. We never use your design to profit from it — your files are used solely to produce your prototype, and you're covered under our Terms and Conditions. If you require a Non-Disclosure or Confidentiality Agreement, we're happy to sign one.
My files are over 10MB — how can I send them to you?
Our Request a Quote section can handle up to 4GB at a time, so we can accept CAD files of virtually any size.
My part is too big to move — can you still scan it?
Generally, yes. If your part is too large to move, our scanning equipment is mobile and can be transported to your site. Contact our team for a quote on on-site scanning.
What file format should I send through?
For quoting we accept STL, STEP, IGES, X_T, OBJ or VRML files. If the prototype needs to be produced via the CNC process, we prefer a STEP, IGES or X_T file.
What size prototype can be produced?
A single build size is restricted by the machine it's made on (see technical specifications). However, there's no overall size limit — we can produce larger prototypes in sections and seamlessly reassemble them into the full design.
Why should I use 3D Prototyping?
We use some of the most up-to-date printers and machines on the market — some costing hundreds of thousands of dollars — producing high-quality prototypes in specialised, realistic materials you simply won't get from low-cost printers. We provide a high level of service and fast turnaround on both quotes and parts, often getting a prototype in your hand in as little as a few hours, not weeks.
