Injection Moulding

Overview

Injection Moulding is a commonly used manufacturing process used for making plastic parts. It can be used for producing parts from both thermoplastic and thermosetting materials. The basic principle involves use of molten plastic that is fed into cavity designed to have the desired shape of the part to he produced.A wide range of everyday items from enclosures , casings , lids to boxes etc. are produced using Injection Moulding

Injection Moulding Process

Injection Moulding is an involved process and consists of various steps which have been outlined below :

  1. Clamping : The process begins with clamping of two halves
  2. Injection : The molten plastic is fed into the mould under pressure.Runner , vent design and gate are designed such that the mould cavities are filled correctly.
  3. Dwelling : After the cavities are filled , mechanical or hydraulic pressure is used to exert more pressure to ensure cavities are filled properly.
  4. Cooling : The molten plastic is then allowed to cool giving it precise cool-down time.
  5. Opening : Two halves of the mould separate.
  6. Ejection : The ejector rods shifts the ejector pin forward and the plastic part is removed from the mould , the part falls into the bin located below the mould.

Why use Injection Moulding

The main advantages of Injection Moulding process are :

  1. It can be used to produce large volume of parts at a very fast rate.
  2. There is a wide range of material to choose from . Some of the materials are ABS, ASA, LDPE, HDPE, PA,PA 66, PMMA, POM, PP, PC, PMMS, PPO, PPS, PTFE, PVC and many more.
  3. It is a very repeatable process , the second part is same as the first part.
  4. The rejection rate is very low compared to the other manufacturing process.
  5. The parts produced have excellent surface quality.
